MARS STORIES

10TH ANNUAL ADOPTION WEEKEND FINDS HOMES FOR NEARLY 250 DOGS AND CATS!

Each year, eight million pets end up homeless in America. In Middle Tennessee alone, where Mars Petcare US is based, more than 40,000 pets are surrendered to shelters annually. That’s why 10 years ago, Mars Petcare US launched their annual Adoption Weekend to help reduce pet homelessness their hometown community.

During this year’s Adoption Weekend, nearly 50 Associates came out to help almost 250 pets find forever families. In partnership with the three largest shelters in Middle Tennessee, and as part of the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program, Mars covered adoption fees and sent adopting families home with resources and goodies to get off to a great start with their new furry friends.

They also announced the new Mars Petcare Home for Good Fund, working with the Safe Coalition. The fund offers grants to coalition partners to help with short-term, solvable issues like behavioral support, spay/neuter fees or heartworm prevention. Ultimately, the grants are meant to help pet owners keep their pets, even in difficult times.

The new fund follows several years of collaboration by animal welfare experts, shelters and rescues in Middle Tennessee. As Lauren Bluestone, director of Nashville Metro Animal Care and Control explains in this Q&A, “Our goal is to save 90% or more of the cats and dogs in our community that are healthy and treatable. We’re already only 2% away from that… Working together makes all the difference.”

As Mark Johnson, president of Mars Petcare North America, recently noted, “Our purpose at Mars Petcare is A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS™, and part of living up to that purpose is helping to find loving homes for pets in shelters and minimize the number of pets that end up in shelters in the first place.”

Thank you to all the Associates who helped bring the 2018 Adoption Weekend to life. And, no matter where you are, please help spread the word about the importance of adoption and ways to reduce pet homelessness.
